I think it’s important that all GoT fans who haven’t read the books see this. This is the first time Dany and Khal Drogo have sex. Notice how it’s consensual and how, instead of crying and wincing in pain like in the show, Dany is an active and willing participant. Why they chose to change it in the show, as they also did with the more often discussed Altar Scene, is beyond me. This scene is sexier and more interesting than the scene the show gives us in addition to, y’know, NOT BEING RAPE. I wish the GoT writers would understand why what they showed is so wrong and why they should stick to the source material.

HERE’S ALSO THE THING.  If you only watched the show and never read the books, you might be confused why Dany is so infatuated with this dude. Show Dany is a girl who has been used and abused by Viserys only to be sold to Drogo, a man who is large and strong and historically violent and who rapes her; Show Dany is a victim who miraculously overcomes this abuse and goes on to fall in love with her rapist and be a strong, independent woman.  There’s a disconnect in the story, a lapse in the narrative of the character development.  BUT THIS BOOK SCENE RIGHT HERE gives you that bridge.  Book Dany is a girl who has been used and abused by Viserys, sold to a man who is large and strong and historically violent BUT in their first real moments together is immeasurably kind to her.  Drogo, big, strong, violent dude, is the first person to be thoughtful of her and to give *her* power.  Previously, Dany was first a Targaryen who was expected to marry her brother, have his babies, and be a silent partner in his rule, and then a female to be used as payment for Viserys’ bid for the throne.  Enter Drogo, who makes her his equal on the wedding night by focusing on her comfort and willingness (a lot of you fellas could learn from Book Drogo, but I digress).  This is why Dany loves Drogo- he shows her kindness and gives her power by recognizing her as another human being.
